In 1956, Argentine racing driver Juan Manuel Fangio won his fourth drivers' championship, driving for Scuderia Ferrari. Fangio had previously won the championship in 1951, 1954, and 1955, making him one of the most successful drivers in the history of Formula One. Fangio's victory in 1956 was achieved in dominant fashion, winning three of the eight races that season and finishing on the podium in six of them. He drove the Ferrari D50, which had been designed by legendary engineer Vittorio Jano, and his performance helped Ferrari win its first constructors' championship since 1953. Fangio's success with Ferrari was particularly notable as it came at a time when he was in his mid-40s and many believed he was past his prime. His fourth championship win secured his status as one of the all-time greats of the sport, and he would go on to win one more championship in 1957 driving for Maserati. Ferrari would continue to be a dominant force in the sport, winning numerous drivers' and constructors' championships in the years that followed. The team remains one of the most successful in the history of Formula One, with 16 constructors' championships and 15 drivers' championships as of 2021.
