In 1958, British racing driver Mike Hawthorn became the third Ferrari driver to win the drivers' championship, following in the footsteps of Alberto Ascari and Juan Manuel Fangio. Hawthorn had joined the Scuderia Ferrari team in 1953 and had previously finished as the championship runner-up in 1954 and 1955. Hawthorn's championship-winning season in 1958 was a closely contested battle, with Hawthorn winning just one race and finishing on the podium in six of the eleven races that season. His main rival for the championship was Stirling Moss, driving for Vanwall, who won four races that season but ultimately fell short in the championship standings. Hawthorn's championship win was significant for Ferrari as it marked the team's third drivers' championship in just seven seasons of Formula One competition. The victory also made Hawthorn the first British driver to win the championship since the inaugural championship in 1950. Hawthorn retired from Formula One at the end of the 1958 season, having achieved three Grand Prix victories and 18 podium finishes in his career. Ferrari would continue to achieve success in the sport, winning numerous drivers' and constructors' championships in the years that followed.
